About 2markdown.io
2markdown.io is a free PDF-to-Markdown converter built for people working with AI tools and structured knowledge — researchers, developers, writers, and anyone moving documents into Obsidian, ChatGPT, RAG pipelines, or static-site documentation.
Why this tool exists
Most PDF-to-Markdown tools require you to upload your file to their servers, often with hidden quotas, watermarks, or signup walls. For documents that contain client work, internal notes, or sensitive content, this is a non-starter.
We built 2markdown.io around a simple principle: default to processing in your browser, ask permission before sending anything out.
For native PDFs — the kind exported from Word, Google Docs, or LaTeX — conversion happens entirely on your device. Your file never leaves your computer. For scanned or complex documents that require OCR, AI mode is a single opt-in click, with a confirmation prompt that tells you exactly where your file is going.
Who's behind this
2markdown.io is built and maintained by an independent developer based in Singapore. You can find my work on GitHub at @yuanjohn01. The project is open about its data handling, its limitations, and its roadmap.
If you find this tool useful, the best way to support it is to share it with someone who would benefit, or to send feedback on what to build next.
What's next
The current version focuses on PDF-to-Markdown for AI workflows. The roadmap includes batch upload, additional input formats (DOCX, HTML, EPUB), reverse conversions (Markdown to PDF/DOCX), and a developer API.
